Abstract : [Abstract]: The authors, in an attempt to understand the vibration transfer characteristics of the human skull, took into consideration how dry the skull was. A dry skull was left in water for 5 days and tests were carried out on changes in vibration transfer time and frequency characteristics between the dry and wet skull. Vibration transfer time was examined in terms of the difference between the leading edge of the vibration transmission signal caused by an impact hammer and the leading edge of the vibration reception signal received by an accelerometer. This was analyzed with a 2 ch. FFT analyzer. Analysis of frequency was done by using random noise for vibration and then using a digital frequency analyzer in the 1-octave bando width to analyze the damping quantity. The result were as follows : (1) The presence of water in the skull caused an increase in the damping quantity of impact for the skull and there was a tendency for the vibration transfer time to increase. However, there was little change in frequency charateristics. (2) As for the vibration transfer speed, when transferred across the sutures of the skull, the dry speed was 636.6 m/sec and the wet speed was 602.1 m/sec. In areas where vibration was not transferred across sutures, the dry speed was 1150.2 m/sec and the wet speed was 992.7 m/sec.
