Abstract : [Abstract]: The enamel caries is initiated by the bacterially produced acid in dental plaque. It is also obvious that other organisms surrounding the enamel surface, i.e. saliva and pellicles, have some complexed relation to its process. On the other hand, some anticaries substances can reduce the mineral's solubility in acid, and they may have the effect on reduction of enamel caries. Therefore, experiment on the effect of pretreatment with some inorganic ions on the acid solubility of hydroxyapatite treated with proteins was done. The results may be summarized as follows : 1. Hydroxyapatite treated with proteins showed the greater reduction of its acid solubility compared with control. Therefore, it was considered that the pellicle might have some resistances to acid challenge. 2. Hydroxyapatite pretreated with fluoride, calcium or aluminum before the treatment with proteins further showed the greater reduction of acid solubility than the above. 3. Protein-treated hydroxyapatite which had pretreated initially aluminum followed by fluoride multiplied remarkably the resistance to acid dissolution. 4. Calcifying solution and synthetic saliva have the greater effect on decreasing acid solubility of hydroxyapatite compared with proteins. From these results, it was suggested that inorganic ions have the effect on reducing the acid solubility of hydroxyapatite, and that the dual pretreatment with aluminum-fluoride could be applied to the prevention of enamel caries.
