Abstract : Abstract : Analysis of the stress exerted on teeth and periodontal tissues has been conducted from a variety of viewpoints. However, since periodontal ligament which acts as the stress breaking agent in periodontal tissues is viscoelastic tissue located between teeth and alveolar bone, it is difficult to approach it directly, which means that many points remain unclear about its stress breaking properties. In the present study, canine mandible was used as the test material in carrying out the modal analysis method to determine the movements and vibratory characteristics of mandible in which teeth were planted, of extracted teeth and of mandible from which teeth were extracted. This information was then used to measure the stress breaking ability as a system under normal conditions. The results were then compared with the results of analysis with the 1/3 octave band analysis method to arrive at the following conclusions. 1. The modal resonant frequency of teeth in mandible was 444 Hz and 568 Hz in mode#1 for the 1st premolars and 1105 Hz and 1173 Hz in mode #2. For the 2nd premolars, it was 415 Hz and 427Hz in mode #1 and 924 Hz and 1021 Hz in mode #2. 2. The resonant frequency showed lower values for the 2nd premolars compared to the values for the 1st premolars. 3. 1/3 octave band analysis showed that the frequency bands in which this can easily be transmitted to the apex of root were the 630 Hz and 800 Hz bands when transmission was in a vertical direction and the 1 kHz band when transmission was in a horizontal direction.
