Abstract : [Abstract] In cases of the Reilly syndrome (irritation syndrome) due to trigeminal irritation, hematuria is frequently observed clinically as well as experimentally. To elucidate the mechanism of the Reilly syndrome due to trigeminal irritation, and the mechanism of hematuria and other microcirculatory disturbances in the pelvic and abdominal organs due to the Reiilly syndrome, interaction between trigeminal irritation and sacral parasympathetic neuron function was investigated. Anesthetized adult cate of both sexes were used. The sacral parasympathetic region was systematically surveyed identifying the neurons by evoked unit responses to antidromic stimulation of the pelvic nerve. By single stimulation of the trigeminal nerve, polysnaptically evoked unit discharges with a long latency in the sacral parasympathetic area could be observed. Repetitive stimulation of the ipsilateral and contralateral trigeminal nerves resulted in three types of changes in the spontaneous discharge patterns of the neurons in the sacral parasympathetic neurons, i.e., increased rate, decreased rate and no change in discharge rate. These three types of neurons were distributed randomly in the region of the sacral parasympathetic area. The grade of these changes showed intensity- and duration-dependency for trigeminal stimulation. The above findings suggest that trigeminal stimulation modifies the discharge patterns of the sacral parasympathetic neurons polysynaptically, and consequently trigeminal stimulation changes the function of the pelvic and abdominal organs via modification of sacral parasympathetic neuron excitability, and this is the main cause of the microcirculatory disturbances of the pelvic and abdominal organs in the Reilly syndrome due to trigeminal irritation.
