Abstract : Abstract: Age estimation by means of racemization of amino acid in deciduous teeth was investigated in regard to correlation of the D/L ratio of aspartic acid against the actual age, and to comparison of reaction velocities of racemization of aspartic acid in deciduous teeth and in permanent teeth. The results were as follows: 1) The correlation of the D/L ratio of aspartic acid against the actual age calculated with 40 dentine samples of deciduous teeth as bases was: r=0.981~r=0.924 (σ=+-0.5~+-1.3). 2) The permanent teeth of young subjects between 10 and 20 years of age (21 samples) proved to be useful for succcssful age estimation (r=0.963, σ=+-0.7). 3) The reaction velocity of racemization of aspartic acid in dentine in life was found to be much higher in deciduous teeth than in permanent teeth. If kept in dry condition, however, both deciduous and permanent teeth showed almost similar reaction velocities. 4) The comparison of the D/L ratios among cross-sections of deciduous teeth higher D/L ratio in the crown and a lower D/L ratio in the root. These results revealed that dentine of deciduous teeth as well as of permanent teeth was quite useful for the purpose of age estimation. Moreover, it was found that the difference in the reaction velocity between deciduous and permanent teeth could be explained by the absorption of the root which occurs with the aging of the subject.
