Abstract : Abstract: It is very important to accurately restore the anatomical shapes in the stoma-tognathic system when prosthetic appliances are constructed. Therefore, the various studies were carried out in this area using different methods. Among them, measurement for plaster casts using a 3-Dimensional Coordinates Apparatus is an effective method. It should be also considered that an amount of pressures from the probe during measurements may often cause the damages of casts, and as a result, this reduces measuring values with accuracy. Therefore, the following evaluations were conducted in this study. 1. Related to the attachment of a contact sensor to the probe minimizing contact pressures. 2. Related to a method of 3-dimensional applications of a centering microscope without any contact pressure. A 3-Dimensional Coordinates Apparatus (XYZAX S-500, Tokyo Seimitsu Co.) was used to evaluate these two methods. Four subjects were selected at random to evaluate measurements by metal test pieces and repeated experiments were conducted regarding the accuracy. Additionally, a value of S/N ratio was applied to evaluate the sensibility and its variations. From these experiments, the following results were obtained. 1. An additional contact sensor was accurate and repeated values with accuracy in all the axes directions were within 2μm. 2. Using a centering microscope, repeated values with accuracy in X and Y axes directions were within 20μm, whereas Z axis direction was within 70μm. 3. In order to accurately measure the casts, an application of S/N ratio was proved to be of validity for this type of experiments. Consequently, results from this pilot study on probes attached to the apparatus should contribute to evaluate the various experiments using plaster casts.
