Abstract : Abstract: To solve problems related to the casting procedure, we have studied the manufacturing of porcelain-fused metal frames by electroforming. To introduce the electroforming method into the field of crown prosthetics, we have developed a system for crown electroforming. The development of this system has made it possible to form an electroform metal frame directly on a working model and to manufacture a porcelain-fused crown. To facilitate the clinical use of electroform metal frames, we recently studied the fusing strength and specificity of 4 commercially available porcelain products. For this purpose, we measured the tensile strength of the porcelain fused to the electroform metal, observed the interface between the porcelain and the metal under a scanning electron microscope (S.E.M.), and carried out elemental analysis using an x-ray microanalyzer (X.M.A). The following results were obtained. 1. The tensile strength was 152.9, 346.9, 230.5 and 259.2Kg/cm2 for type I, II, III and IV porcelain, respectively. 2. Type II porcelain had the highest tensile strength (587.0Kg/cm2 at 0.1A and 512.7Kg cm2 at 0.2A). 3. Scanning electron microscopy and elemental analysis with a X.M.A. revealed that the components of porcelain had been fused to the surface of the electroform metal. 4. When the porcelain was detached from the metal, the metal surface showed different distributions of porcelain elements, depending on the types of porcelain used.
