Abstract : Abstract : The acrylic resins used to construct the denture base is the most commonly used resin in the field of dentistry. Large amounts of this resin are used clinically, improving the surface features of this heat-cured resin, for example, its abrasion resistance as well as its mechanical properties, is important to advance the field of clinicol prosthodontia. Sputter deposition is a technique in which particles of a material are sputtered onto a base substance at high energy. The material fuses tightly to the base and can create a new surface on several different types of metals. The technique can be performed easily at relatively low temperatures, even at room temperature. Lately this technique has been used to create a layer of titanium on the surface of a denture base. In this experiment, a test piece of resin was coated with titanium(thickness : 1000A and 3000A), using a Shimadzu Sputtering System HRS-552 at direct-current magnetron discharges of 300 and 500 W. The resulting titanium-coated resin product was examined for surface roughness, contact angle and hardness. In addition, a scratch test was performed to assess the adhesive bond between the titanium and the resin. These parameters were analyzed and correlated with the power level used and the thickness of the titanium layer. 1. To use sputter deposition, it became possible to form a metal layer on the surface of acrylic denture base resins. 2. Titanium coating on denture base resins improves the mechanical properties(wettability.)of the surface. 3. The power of adherence between resin and titanium was in the range of 1.60 to 2.34 gf. 4. The time required to form a titanium layer was short(45 sec. for a 1000A and 120 sec. for a 3000A thick layer). 5. It seems that Sputter deposition can be applied to the use of titanium in clinical prosthodontics.
