Abstract : Abstract : In designing the base structure and the connector in partial denture, it is important to make proper selection of the material and the morphology used to prevent them from easy deformation and damage when they are subjected to occlusal pressure. Efforts have been made to improve connector strength and the functional pressure enduring capability by expanding denture base area as much as possible. In the present research, we have studied the effects of the design of the connectors to the supporting teeth and denture by using three types of connectors and comparing the dynamic characteristics between two states of denture(an unrestrained free state and an occlusion state). For use in the study, three types of connector, a component used commonly for correcting the maxillary saddle deficit(palatal bar, palatal strap, and palatal plate)were created. Following are the results. 1. Three different resonance modes were detected in all the denture specimens incorporating these connectors. In the resonance mode of #1, the rigid-mode resonance characteristic of these dentures was detected. 2. In those modes involving bending and torsion elements, the points of the inflection were located along the finishing line or at the boundary section between the metallic frame and the resin base in the lower of the artificial teeth. 3. In all the specimens the larger degrees of displacement were measured in the impact sides than in the opposite sides. 4. Fixing of these specimens to restrain their free movement caused the degree of displacement in the sides opposite to the impact sides restrained to less than about a half of the degree measured when they were impacted under free-moving conditions. 5. As for the mechanical strength of connector, the plate-type connectors exhibited smaller longitudinal deformations than that in the bar-type and strap-type counterparts, irrespective of the methods used to fix the specimens.
