Abstract : Abstract : Reportedly, the content of trace elements in human deciduous teeth might reflect past environmental exposure of individuals. Members of our department formerly performed accurate measurements of Cu, Pb, Zn and Cd in deciduous teeth with flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometry after each element had been isolated with ion exchange chromatography, which is a very time-consuming process. The purpose of the present study was to simplify the quantitative assay and diminish sample volume. The author experimentally examined several possible analytical conditions and measuring methods for simultaneous multielement atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The above listed elements in maxillary deciduous canines were determined with the standard addition method without being chemically isolated. The mean values (μg/g) of the elements in enamel and dentin were 4.10+-2.59 and 4.37+-2.05 for Cu, 2.59+-1.56 and 1.66+-0.82 for Pb, 91.31+-27.54 and 82.07+-25.97 for Zn, and 0.04+-0.03 and 0.02+-0.01 for Cd, respectively. The concentration and distribution of the four elements in the teeth revealed remarkably the varieties of essential and pollutive trace elements contents according to the individuals. In particularly, it was a matter of interest that levels of Pb and Cd were dominant in enamel in almost cases. The possible smallest sample volume was calculated as 1mg of enamel, 2mg of dentin, respectively. These results indicated that this system of measurement contributes to both simplification of assays and reduction of sample volume for measuring trace elements in deciduous teeth.
