Abstract : [Abstract]: For the purpose of analyzing the transmission characteristics of lateral impact applied to teeth, the authers gave vibration to the crowns from lateral directions using an experimental model, and examined how the waves of impact hit the apical portion of the roots from the aspect of the three dimension. The results are summed up as follows ; 1. When vibration was given to the crowns of mandibular premolars from the direction at an angle of 60 degrees with the saggital plane, waves of the mesiodistally applied impact were transmitted to their mesiodistal, buccolingual and apical aspect as they equally attenuated in force by degrees. 2. In the case of 90-degree vibration, the mesiodistally applied impact on the maxillary and mandibular premolars ran directly to the apical portion of the roots of each tooth without much attenuation. 3. When the lateral impact was exerted on the maxillary and mandibular molars at an angle of 60 degrees or 90 degrees, the waves of impact which ran in a direction parallel with the direction of vibration reached their apex, almost without attenuation. In the other two directions, i.e., mesiodistal and apical aspect, it was observed, the impact was transmitted equally with some attenuation. 4. In the functional cusps of both upper and lower teeth, it was found, the impact given horizontally from the mesiodistal aspect was easily transmitted to the apex, while the impact given from a direction in parallel with the direction of vibration was easily sent in the buccoligual and mesiodistal directions.
