Abstract : [Abstract]: The skull, teeth, periodontium, masticatory muscles and other organs in the craniofacial complex can be included in the concept of stomatognathic system. Recently, much attention has been given to the importance of harmonious functions of those system components, not to mention their individual functions. As we considered it is important to measure the masticatory force transmitted by the cranium, the largest part of the system, we tried to shed light on the occlusal force transmission route in the temporomandibular joints in the present study. The findings are as follows : 1. As for the mandibular, the mandibular body, ramus mandibular and condylar process showed different vibration transmission characteristics probably because of their morphological and structural differences. Especially in the condylar process, the transmission of greater force was noted. 2. From the vibration transmission characteristics, it was found that posterior occlusion has the function of not only supporting the occusal force to adequately distribute each part of the skull but also lightening the stress on the temporomandibular joints. 3. Upon stress analysis, it was suggested that an adequate support of posterior occlusion alleviate the stress on the temporomandibular joints. 4. Stress analysis also found that when the applied force moves in a posterior-superior direction, the burden carried by the temporomandibular joints increases. 5. Lack of posterior occlusion reduced the masticatory function, not only that, it unfavorably affected its occlusal force transmission characteristics, particularly on the temporomandibular joints. 6. The vibration transmission characteristics and stress analysis revealed that the force exerted on teeth in the axial direction were peculiarly transmitted in the posterior part of the articular tubercle, which is believed to play an functional role of temporomandibular joints.
