Abstract : [Abstract]: The area along the finish line bordering a resin denture with a metal base is known as the site where the breakage of the denture and the detachment of the resin often occur. Some researchers in our department have conducted modal analysis and determined a point of inflection through observation of the load exerted on the denture. We have also reported that stress concentration in the border area differs depending on the forms of finish line. Following up these studies, our laboratory further assessed the dynamic effects of finish lines designed differently on the denture and abutment teeth with a view to providing new guidelines for clinical dentistry. A metal framework was mounted one a simulation model with unilateral bounded saddle and free-end saddle dentures of the lower jaw ; dynamic stress and displacement were measured and examined by means of a modal analysis system. Two samples of finish lines were put to test. One was an ordinary finish line (FLS) designed on the borders between denture base and lingual bar. The other was the type (FLL) that is connected with a clasp with a reinforced skeletal metal portion. 1. Three kinds of vibration mode were detected in each sample. There was a tendency for reasonance frequency to become lower in the free-end saddle denture than in the bounded saddle denture. 2. The dentures and abutment teeth showed mesiodistal movements at mode 1, and some deformation on the borders of the finish line at mode 2 and mode 3. 3. Deformation in the finish line area was more remakable in the free-end saddle denture than in bounded saddle denture. 4. In the FLL model, deformation occurred less in the finish line area.
