Abstract : [Abstract]: Using an impact hammer, we measured the viscoelasticity of the mucous membrane covering the palate in healthy adults, as a trial to see if this method could be used in dental practice. The experimental group was comprised of 33 persons aged 20 to 33 years (the young group in the stable phase) and 11 persons aged 54 years old and above (the aged group in the involution phase). Initially, percussion was applied to seven points of the palatine mucosa in each subject. We also compared these values with measurements in specific areas of the palate as arbitrarily divided by the authors, based on the prosthodontic classification system. The results were as follows : 1. Findings supported the belief that the use of an impact hammer could be used in determining the viscoelasticity of oral mucous membrane in clinics. 2. The elasticity of palatine mucosa (T) was largest in the central area of the palate, followed by the major palatine foramens, palatine rugae, the areas adjacent to the first premolars and the soft palate area, in that order. 3. The viscosity of the palatine mucosa (η) was greatest in the central area of the palate, followed by the major palatine foramens, the areas adjacent to the first premolars, the palatine rugae and the soft palate. 4. Between men and women in the young group in the stable phase, no difference was noted in T, but a slight difference was observed in η. 5. The amount of percussion suitable for determining viscoelasticity was 0.26-0.29N for the hard palate and 0.42N for the soft palate.
