Abstract : Abstract : We analyzed the dynamic effects of clasps on abutment teeth by examining the damping quantity of vibration and the band of frequency. Given the length of clasp arms, clasp material, the quality of material used in the abutment crowns, and the contact between the clasp terminal and the abutment tooth as conceivable force trasmitting factors, the damping of the force applied to the clasp and abutment tooth was measured at the root of teeth. Our findings are as follows : 1. The clasp itself had a tendency to show the vibration characteristics of resonance with its frequency band ranging from 0.5 to 1 KHz. Differences in resonance frequency range were noted depending on the length of clasp arms. The resonance of the clasp with a 15mm arm was singnificantly larger than the clasp with a 10mm arm. 2. Vibration damping was observed in the abutment teeth. The natural teeth and metal crowns showd a similar damping curve. But the porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns were smaller in the quantity of damping than natural teeth and metal crowns. 3. Upon examination of the effects of contact conditions between the clasp and the abutment tooth surface, it was found that the amount of damping was larger in the samples given much play between the clasp arm and the abutment tooth surface than those given no leeway. 4. In designing and manufacturing clasps, the most important factor tobe taken into consideration turned out to be the quality of clasp material, followed by contact condition and arms length in that order.
