Abstract : [Abstract] For the purpose of examining the morphologic characteristics of the oral cavity in infants at the predental period, we investigated regarding with size and form of predental arch using upper and lower predental casts obtained from 6-month old infants (21 male, 32 female infants). The following conclusions emerged ; 1) Maximum maxillary predental arch width and some other measurements showed markedly sex difference in the sex, it was significantly large in male infants. 2) Maxillary total predental arch length of the male infants in the breast fed group were significantly smaller than those in the other male groups. 3) All of the measurments regarding with predental arch lengths among reference points on maxillary in male infants were larger than that in female infants. 4) Asymmetric predental archs were existed in both male and female infants. Some of them are more than 2mm difference between left and right maxillary predental arch length. 5) The morphology of the deepest part of the palate could be classified into round, sphenoid, ellipsoid, separate and heart shape. 6) A para-alveolar wall was observed in all cases. The average width in male infants was 2.46mm and in female infants was 2.33mm. Its average height in male infants was 0.93mm and in female infants was 1.05mm. 7) An influence of the feeding method on the para-alveolar wall and sucking ridge and fossa was not observed.
