Abstract : [Abstract] The purposes of this study were 1) to compare the shear bond strength of five commercially available third generation dentin bonding systems and 2) to identify the relationship between shear bond strength and the fracture behavior of the upper one-third of the fractured surface. Five commercially available dentin bonding systems, Scotchbond Multi-Purpose (SMP), Liner Bond (LB), Bondwell LC (BW), Liner Bond II (LB II), and Imperva Bond (IB) were applied to bovine dentin surfaces. The shear bond strength was measured, and the fractured dentin and composite surfaces were examined by SEM. The results were as follows : 1. The shear bond strength of LB II, SMP were significantly higher than those of LB, and BW (p<0.01). 2. Active treatment of IB system did not show a statistically significant effect on the shear bond strength. 3. From SEM observation of LB, it was suggested that the tensile stress was produced on the upper half, while compressive stress was produced on the lower half of the specimen during the shear bond test. 4. The shear bond strength of specimens showing complete adhesive failure on the upper one-third were significantly lower than those of mixed failures involving both adhesive and cohesive failure of dentin and/or composite. 5. The specimens showing cohesive failure of dentin on the upper one-third exhibited higher bonding strength. The correlation between the bond strength and ratio of cohesive failure of dentin was obtained from the results of measurements. 6. In case of evaluating the relation of the shear bond strength and fracture analysis, it is conceivable that the obsevation of the upper one-third and the whole fractured surface is extremely important.
