Abstract : While investigating the mechanism of free radical-induced tissue damage in inflammatory diseases that involve pathogenic processes similar to the periodontal diseases, we noted the herb medicine, Curcuma longa, and examined its antioxidation activity. The antioxidation activity of Curcuma longs was examined by the chemiluminescence and TBA method and ESR method, and antioxidation activities were detected in a concentration-dependent manner except the gajyutu Curcuma longa. When the antioxidation activities were detected by ESR, antioxidation activities of spring Curcuma longa were the strongest among those examined. To examine the effects of Curcuma longa on the growth of animals and plants, the effects on the morphology of cultured human periodontal ligament fibroblasts and on the growth of white radish sprouts were observed. Cultured human periodontal ligament fibroblasts were lysed in Curcuma longa solution at a high concentration (0.005%~), irrespective of its type, but they were not morphologically affected in the low concentration solution (~0.001%), similar to the effect in the control. With regard to the growth of white radish sprouts, there were no significant differences between the autumn Curcuma Tonga and the spring Curcuma longa, but the growth in the autumn Curcuma longa solution was good. These results suggest that Curcuma longa is effective for protection from free radical-induced tissue damage.
