Abstract : | Recent research has shown that biting inhibits various stress reactions. It has also been reported that stress causes an increase in neutrophils and a decrease in lymphocytes and that these changes damage various organs in the body. In the present study, we applied restraint stress for 6 hours to 12 Wistar rats and measured their bruxism-like activity with a specially designed electromyographic system. In addition, after the stress condition ended we measured blood concentrations of catecholamine, cortisol, and corticosterone, the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio, and the area of hemorrhage spots on the mucous membrane of the stomach. We sectioned brains and counted the number of CRF-positive cells in the hypothalamus. We observed that the applied stress reversed the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio. Concentrations of catecholamine, cortisol, and corticosterone were higher than those of a control group of 15 rats that received no stress. The mean area of hemorrhaging stomach tissue from experimental animals was greater than that of control animals. Bruxism-like activity was associated with lower values of all these physiological parameters in a duration-dependent manner. The results suggest that bruxism-like activity of the masticatory organ, mediated by stress reactions of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal system and the sympathetic nervous system, reeulates allostasis. |
