Abstract : [Abstract] Postmortem phenomena are phenomena appearing in the body after death. Precise recognition of the phenomena is the basis for estimating the postmortem elapsing time, and also information on the cause of death. The objective of this study was to clarify histologically postmortem changes of the rat masseter muscles under various environmental conditions. Tissue specimens were exposed following four different environmental conditions; at 23℃ in the room (Group A), at crica 15.6℃ outside the room in Shinjyuku-ku Tokyo Japan (Group B), at 15℃ in the water bath (Group C), and at 0℃ in the refrigerator (Group D), respectively for 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours. A clumping of chromatin was observed in Group A at 12 hours, in Group B and C at 6 hours, and in Group D at 3 hours. Swelling of nucleus was observed in Group A at 6 hours, in Group B and C at 48 hours, and Group D at 24 hours. Disappearance of nucleus was observed in Group A and B at 72 hours, but not in Group C and D. Diffluence of skeletal muscle fibers was observed in Group A at 24 hours, in Group B at 6 hours, in Group C and D at 3 hours. In this study the masseter muscles showed postmortem changes such as diffluence of skeletal muscle fibers at earlier time just after death under the condition of dramatic temperature change, suggesting that it is most important to consider the cadaveric environmental condition within 3 hours.
