Abstract : [Abstract] We conducted a survey of the mothers of children at a nursery school in Sapporo to investigate beverage consumption among young children. We studied beverage intake of the children between and during meals, on outings, etc., including the amounts and frequency of sports or isotonic drink intake, and the reasons the mothers had for providing them to their child. The survey was conducted in 2001 and 2010, and the results were compared. In both 2001 and 2010, over 65% of mothers answered that their doctor had advised giving sports drinks to their child, and in 2010, fewer mothers answered that publicity or personal experience had incited them to provide the sports drinks than in 2001. Although the survey results did not show any difference in the views the mothers had about sports drinks, the mothers in 2010 were found to pay more attention to the amount and the way they gave sports drinks to their child than in 2001.
