Abstract : [Abstract] The present study was aimed to clarify the cerebral mechanism of the stress-attenuating effect of the activation of masticatory organ under stress situation by focusing on the relationship between the amygdala, which is the center in charge of regulating emotions, and the hypothalamus, which is a center affiliated with the autonomic nervous system as well as governing the response to stress in a homeostasis. In future, the results of the present study propose the act of masticatory organ as simple and easy stress-attenuating tool for stress-related mental illness after disaster victims. As results, the expression of phosphorylated-extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (p-ERK1/2), such as one of the stress marker, was enhanced by stress in the hypothalamus paraventricular nucleus (PVN). However, Stress-induced expression of pERK1/2 in PVN were decreased by simultaneously activation of masticatory organ during stress. Furthermore, this phenomenon was not observed in the side of the unilaterally destroyed amygdala by kainic acid. Namely, afferent input from the activation of masticatory organ was regulates the expression of pERK1/2 in PVN through the amygdala. The results of this study suggest that activation of masticatory organ may be useful in the prevention of systemic diseases such as depression and heart diseases, which are believed to have developed at an increasing rate among disaster victims.
