Abstract : [Abstract] In environments such as during a natural disaster, biofilms increase susceptibility to pneumonia and infections, indicating the need for simpler and more effective means of oral care. This review presents three articles describing the use of surface pre-reacted glass-ionomer (S-PRG) filler. S-PRG filler was shown to have ability to release fluoride and other ions (e.g., Sr2+, SiO32-, BO33-, Na+, and Al3+). The first study, which assessed the antibacterial effects of S-PRG filler eluate on polymicrobial biofilms from saliva, found that S-PRG eluate was a superior antibacterial agent than NaF solution. The second study assessed the in vitro ability of a fluoride-releasing coating material containing S-PRG filler to remineralize various dentin surfaces following their demineralization. This coating material had the advantages of easy application and thin film formation and could remineralize demineralized root dentin adjacent to the coated surface, as well as resin-modified glass-ionomer coating material. The third article investigated the in vitro ability of S-PRG filler containing light-cured resin-based sealant to inhibit the demineralization of artificial enamel grooves, finding that this novel sealant could effectively prevent the demineralization of regions adjacent to the artificial enamel grooves. Taken together, these studies indicate that dental materials or oral care products with fluoride-releasing and recharging abilities may be used to treat undesirable oral conditions.
