Abstract : [Abstract] Dental charts have been used as a standard source of information in forensic personal identification. Dental chart at the time of a disaster is generally carried out by handwriting the information on a paper-based dental chart before inputting it into a computer manually. A database of post-mortem dental data recorded on a standardized dental chart would be extremely useful following such a mass disaster. To create a better and more useful database, we have developed a system that uses a digital pen to digitize handwritten information on a micro dotted paper-based dental chart. The data on the chart are first stored in the memory of the digital pen and then transferred to a computer via Bluetooth. This new method provides much faster and easier transmission of handwritten data with much greater accuracy than the conventional pen-and-paper method. With this digital system, handwritten data can be added to a database in a remote server computer by checking a box provided on the paper dental chart. The data are quickly uploaded to the database, facilitating the worldwide search for matching ante mortem dental records. From the result of the questionnaire surveys, we recognized that digital pen and micro dotted paper-based dental chart is very useful compared with conventional pen and paper - based dental chart.
