Abstract : [Abstract] The main objective of this paper was to clarify the tendency for the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders in elderly individuals. In the dental clinical field, diagnostic imaging is used to evaluate deformation of the mandibular condyle and articular disc displacement in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). To observe TMJ dysfunction in elderly individuals through not only diagnostic imaging, but also gross observation, we examined cadavers used for the teaching of anatomy. Using 34 TMJs from 17 cadavers, we observed the morphology of the mandibular condyle and TMJ disc. Three TMJs showed disc displacement, 6 showed disc perforation, and 29 showed deformation of the mandibular condyle. These findings indicate that the TMJ shows a variety of morphological characteristics and bone structures in the elderly. Further studies are warranted to investigate TMJ dysfunction in elderly individuals and its relationship with systemic disease in greater detail.
